Cable-neck Cardigan (2025)

Silk-mohair yarn, alpaca yarn, hand-spun romney with mohair locks, assorted hand-spun long-wools, and wood buttons handmade by Stephen Willette.

Pattern by Ruth Doherty

The Cable-neck Cardigan showcases and highlights a variety of materials in combination, from the various fibers composing the yarn, to the unique species of wood that form the buttons. I created this cardigan design by first knitting the cabled strip of fabric that forms the collar, then picking up stitches from the side to knit the raglan-shaped cardigan body, top-down. My inspiration for this design stemmed from my interest in combining modular and raglan construction and creating a nature-inspired color palette using a combination of unique textured skeins. As I striped in new colors and textures of yarn, I used garter stitch to emphasize the contrast of each material. This difference in texture showcases the unique attributes of each yarn, such as the curly wisps of mohair locks and gradating colors in the yarn I hand-spun for this project.
