Wood scraps, Codium fragile seaweed, Paint, Thread.

Seaweed Shrine (2019) is a an installation that recalls the barrel vaults seen in the gothic cathedrals I studied in Architectural History classes. However, by constructing the piece from wood that is far less permanent than stone, and handmade seaweed paper that evokes translucent stained glass that I made from Codium fragile, a species of seaweed invasive to the Northern Atlantic Ocean, I bring to mind the parallels between organized religion and spirituality in the natural world, and the impermanence and fragility of both. The piece is meant to be interacted with, and viewers are encouraged to enter the intimate space.
